What is a solstice?

A solstice is an event occurring when the Sun appears to reach its most northerly or southerly point relative to the equator.

When is the solstice?

Two solstices occur annually,  around June 20-22nd  and December 20-23rd.

The Winter Solstice

The winter solstice is the day with the shortest period of daylight and longest night of the year when the Sun is at its lowest daily maximum elevation in the sky. The winter solstice is a time for introspection and reflection. Celebrated on the 21st of June in the Southern hemisphere and the 22nd of December in the Northern hemisphere. The winter solstice is the turning point of the dark hibernation of winter as we move towards the coming of the light and celebrations of spring. The hibernation of the dark is in reflection and preparation for the coming of the light.

Summer Solstice

The summer solstice or Mid-Summer’s Day has been seen as a significant time of the year in many cultures where there are many festivals and rituals celebrating the longest day of the year which occurs in the middle of summer. Summer can begin with dreams of sun-worshipping, bonfires, sunrises and sunsets. A time of new beginnings as the sun is very powerful and it is looked upon as a time for agricultural growth. Our connection with the sun also symbolises personal and spiritual growth and this may include manifesting our personal goals, enhancing our intuition, our wisdom, our sacred knowledge, and any type of psychic ability. The Summer solstice occurs in The Northern Hemisphere on the 21st of June and in the Southern Hemisphere on the 22nd of December.
